Introducing Summer 23 ‘Azulejo’: an ode to the artisans and eternal beauty of the mediterranean.
Nodding to the notion of the artistic anecdotes articulated within Portugal through the use of decorative ceramic tilework as a form of storytelling, dating back to the 13th century. While obtaining its roots from Spain, the word azulejo is taken from the Arabic language and translates to the word for “small polished stone”.
This season, Shona Joy endeavours into the humming Mediterranean province with an embrace of the motifs and influences of the azulejo – each speaking a unique language and adorned in the spirit of the region. A palette of joyful shades are met with bright and bold textiles that draw upon the endless neighbourhood facades, glittering sunlit coastlines and the freedom in embracing escape of monotony.
