PEOPLE

We’re passionate about using our voice to create awareness for the causes we feel connected to, and giving back to organisations on the ground driving change – particularly those affecting women, children and the environment.

We’re proud to hold long-term partnerships with a number of incredible organisations including; Women’s Community Shelters, UN Women, Plan International Australia, Thread Together, Surfaid and Dress For Success. We're committed to continue providing financial donations as well as hands-on support through our staff volunteering program, as well as engaging in initiatives such as The Encoreship.

PRODUCT

Our commitment to developing well-crafted and timeless pieces that are treasured for years to come, is grounded in circularity. We are proud to be on a journey to transition our fibre portfolio to preferred and low impact fabrications including alternatives such as LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose, Recycled Polyester and GOTS Certified 100% Organic Cotton.

Our objective is to limit the impact our products have on our natural environment, with a focus on water and biodiversity as well as deep dive into playing a stewardship role at the end of life.

PLANET

As an Australian brand, our connection to the natural world inspires us daily and we are committed to respecting, protecting and nurturing the planet. Our objective is to consider our climate impact on the natural resources the planet so generously provides, with a focus on water, biodiversity and building resilient communities.

THE ENCORESHIP

The Encoreship is a first-of-its-kind initiative providing employment opportunities to women who are facing challenges re-entering the workforce after an extended period away.

In Australia, workforce participation for women is 9.5% behind men (ABS, 2020), with the median superannuation balance for women being 22% lower than men at retirement (WGEA, 2020) and managers being almost twice as likely to be men then women (ABS,2020).

Last year, 61% of job losses in Australia (Feb-Oct 2021) were experienced by women, and 72% of women feel they needed to up-skill before they could re-enter the workforce (Anthil, 2016).

Alongside a collective of like-minded Australian brands, Shona Joy is offering 3-month paid placements at our head office, to women who have been out of the workforce for an extended period, and are having difficulty re-entering. This employment opportunity is designed to empower those women with new work experience and connections, refreshed confidence and a pathway to secure meaningful employment.

Contributing to a cleaner environment LENZING™ ECOVERO™ Viscose fibres omit 50% less greenhouse gas emissions, and utilise less water compared to conventional viscose.

LUXE: RECYCLED POLYESTER

Our new Luxe range is now made using recycled polyester (rPET).

It’s taken over a year for our team to develop our new Luxe fabrication, ensuring we maintain the same luxurious quality and silk-touch feel.

Made from plastic bottles that would have otherwise ended up in landfill, Recycled Polyester also utilises fewer resources than conventional polyester, and generates far fewer CO2 emissions and is part of our commitment to becoming a more responsible and circular brand.

SEABIN PROJECT

Seabin Project is responsible for collecting trash, oil, fuel and detergents from our oceans.

There are over 850 Seabins installed globally and their technology has collected 1.8 million kilos of garbage and plastics from our oceans to date.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Seabin moves up and down with the range of the tide collecting all floating rubbish.

Water is pulled in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin, with a submersible water pump capable of displacing 25.000 litres per hour. The water is then pumped back into the marina leaving litter and debris trapped in the catch bag.

The Seabin can catch an estimated 3.9kgs of floating debris per day or 1.4 tons per year (depending on weather and debris volumes) including micro plastics down to 2mm small.

A challenge Seabin Project continues to face is a lack of volunteers.

As part of our ongoing partnership our team have loved volunteering their time to help Seabin with servicing and Data Collection.

To volunteer your time or make a donation we encourage you to visit their website.

SURFAID

All mothers and their children deserve access to basic healthcare and the chance for their families to get ahead. SurfAid is a not for profit organisation committed to improving the health and wellbeing of mothers and children living in isolated regions, by enabling local people to develop and apply their own development ideas rather than simply delivering our own.

To support the incredible work of SurfAid's Women & Children Program, we've curated a capsule collection of easy wear linen outfits, designed for the Australian Summer, in a palette of Coconut Milk, Olive and Sand. For every garment sold from the SJ X Surfaid Capsule Collection, Shona Joy will be donating $10 to SurfAid.

Donated funds will support SurfAid in improving the lives of women and children in remote areas and isolated villages where the maternal and child mortality rates are some of the highest in the world. Together, we can give families the best chance of getting ahead by providing access to healthcare, clean water and sanitation and improved nutrition.

DRESS FOR SUCCESS

Each year, 100,000 women in NSW along struggle to find a job - putting themselves and their family at risk. Dress for Success Sydney is a charity that has brought hope to more than 15,000 of these disadvantaged women - transforming their lives by offering the skills and confidence they need to secure work and gain financial independence.

For the past two years, Shona Joy has partnered with Dress for Success - as part of our mission to do our part in ensuring every woman has the same opportunity to feel independent and empowered. We have proudly donated our dresses to both the Sydney and Illawarra branches, supported the organisations through fundraising and donations and have dressed young women attending their school formals or graduation dances, who couldn't have otherwise afforded to attend.
